Schools

I support the 13th High School in the Crofton area; it is ridiculous to bus those students to South River or Arundel, and the people of Crofton ought to have a high school around which they can rally their community.

There is, however, a problem with any school construction, and with education in general, in my view, and that is this: Unless parents get involved with their children’s educations – by reading to them at night, helping them with their homework, playing games with them as they are riding in the car – no matter how much money we invest in building schools, no matter how well trained the teachers are, no matter how small the class sizes are – we are dooming ourselves to failure. Accordingly, I will encourage the Board of Education to establish a program wherein parents get instruction as to how to reinforce the lessons learned in school and otherwise get involved in their children’s educations. I will seek funding for this program from businesses such as BG&E, so that this program will not cost the taxpayer one penny.

I will also encourage the Board of Education to establish a peer-to-peer review program, wherein experienced teachers lend their expertise to newcomers, as well as other experienced teachers. This will result in better teachers for our children, at no cost.
